Please help a clueless mom with lawn trouble?

Keep in mind, I have no idea about lawns.... My backyard is huge and after the rainy season, what I thought was grass was long so I mowed it and was taking care of it. It was all green and soft and nice just patchy. So I bought my son a bunch of outdoor toys, and it was really nice. Since I was keeping up the lawn I figured I would buy grass seed for it, and I bought this grass seeds that kills weeds but doesn't harm the grass, so I was like awesome. Turns out my stupid yard is like 80% weeds and 20% grass and now its turning all brown and hard. To reveal stickers, these little pokey balls that get stuck in everything. My son wont go near his new toys and says ow wee every time he points to the grass. I have no idea what to do now, do I rent a rototiller for the hardware store and rip it all up? Or buy a hoe and go to town. The yard is very big I would say at least 20ft x20ft, I really want to to have a green lawn, but have no idea where even to begin. What do I do?

Really, 20ft by 20ft? A push lawn mower would do just fine, used about once a week. Not enough
room to turn a riding mower around. Regular mowing will keep the weeds from reseeding themselves.
When you start seeing patches of green, buy a grass seed that is suited for your yards condition.
If it is sunny, a grass suited for sunny conditions. Shady? Then a grass seed that loves shade. If you have both sun and shade, mix the seed. In cool, damp weather, clip the grass close, Hot dry weather
don't cut it so short so the sun wont dry out the soil and over heat the roots. Those little poky balls?
