Early Socialization - Is Your Puppy Prepared for the Outside World?

Introducing your puppy to a variety of environments and experiences is a very important step in his training process. To develop a healthy mental well-being, he needs to know that the world is a fun place to discover. This can only be achieved through proper and continuous socialization.

Socialization is consists of preparing your puppy for healthy mental development by exposing him in a good way to different sights, smells, and sounds. Socialization also includes interaction with people, dogs, other pets and other objects like moving vehicles.

A friend of mine decided to finally get a dog. Only, he barely spent time with his dog. He thought that it would be best if he kept his dog locked up in the basement and he rarely took him out to the park or even a walk around the neighborhood. A dog should not be socially awkward like my friend's pet.

He barely allowed his dog to run around in his fenced back yard. And when he did allow his dog to run around freely in the yard, the dog would go bonkers! When ever my friend travels with his dog, the dog barks and growls at everyone that walks by. This is why it is imperative that you prepare your pet for the outside world.

So, taking your puppy to a training class is a great way to introduce him to a variety of experiences. Socializing your puppy calls for much more than teaching your dog training skills. Socialization actually trains your pet to interact with different situations, explore without fear, and get to know as much as he can about the universe around him, thereby giving him a healthy life.

First and foremost, socialization should begin in your puppy's first home and his breeder should introduce him to a variety of stimuli from the moment they are born.

For example, the litter should be exposed to a variety bedding materials to get them used to different textures and surfaces. Objects like balls, squeaky toys, bubble wraps, plastic bags, and other fun items that your will enjoy should be introduced slowly and as often as possible. This helps them approach new situations with confidence.

The following are a few examples of objects and situations that your pet should see and experience from the moment he opens his cute little eyes:

1. Introducing him people wearing hoods, hats, coats, and loud clothes.
2. Watching kids play in on the playground.
3. Watching little animals (birds, squirrels, etc. - just don't allow chasing).
4. Riding in the car inside a crate with windows rolled up and then rolled down.
5. Minimal traffic.
6. The sounds of different kitchen appliances.
7. A quick trip to the vet.
8. Going up and down a stair case.
9. Meeting new people of different ages.
10. Meeting new puppies and dogs (Keep puppy on your arms and watch him closely).
11. Meeting people who use wheelchairs, walkers, and canes.
12. Minimal crowds.
13. A flying kite.
14. Introduce your new puppy to different "odd" objects like plastic bags and fire hydrants.
15. Introduce him to a variety of sights, sounds, and smells of different objects .

Maltese puppy and potty training?

So, we got a maltese puppy and had him for 2 weeks now. He is 3 month old as of today. Potty training is going well if i pick him up and bring him outside. I have tried for him to come to the door, but he'll just run the other way. I have tried with treats and squeaky toys....so far no luck. I also have 2 other dogs and the puppy follows them everywhere, except outside.
Eventually, i would like for the pup to be at the door when he needs to go, but cant pick him up forever to go outside...any ideas?

Start obedience training. Teach the puppy to come. Say his name, then "come" -- give tiny treat rewards when he does what you want him to do. After he has coming to you down pat, train him to sit, and other things

Right now the dog does what he wants because you haven't asserted yourself as his leader... until you do, he will do whatever he feels like doing. This takes time, patience, a calm and relaxed trainer. Your dog will appreciate it, too

????Have you ever taken your dogs on a random shopping spree?

I am tomorrow I am loading up my car with 3 of our yorkies(not teacup, standard I dont buy into all that puppy mill runt bred pups)and taking them to get pampered at the Petco groomer and when they are done buying them their winter coats, cold weather boots, treats, squeaky toys and more.
I dont have anything to do tomorrow so I made the random decision of taking my yorkies that need to be groomed and pampered at Petco.

So what about you guys ever made the random decision of taking your pooches out and taking them on a shopping spree???

I volunteer Tuesday and some Thursdays at a animal division near my house and I donate $300 a month to shelter I volunteer with.

Yes, when I say let's go,it's who can get to the SUV the fastest and of course Mr.Demon always gets the front seat and Bo and Koda the back seat.

We all love to go to Pets Mart and we go once a week, every Saturday, they do enjoy seeing all the people, and everyone knows us, and all come to pet and love on them.

I don't know if you are aware of it,but all Petco's sedate dogs to be groomed, they are always in the news for this...

One store in here in Texas has closed, all their groomers admitted all dogs are sedated before bathing and if need be, more before the actual groomer starts the grooming on them...Just a heads up for your babies......so if they ever seem kinda tired after their grooming, this is why......customers of the store here began complaining about their dogs coming home and sleeping all afternoon after being groomed, our Local News station did a piece on them, and busted them....in 3 wks, they closed that store...But all Petcos do it.....

you may just want to watch your babies behavior after you pick them up..
