Stress and Pets

Stress - Stress and Pets

As with raising children, dealing with pets can be stressful. But often the situation is exactly the reverse: having pets frequently provides one of the best stress relief mechanisms around.

Several studies suggest that having a pet helps recovering surgery patients heal faster. If the link between infection and stress that some of them show is correct, this shouldn't be surprising. The positive effect on the immune system could account for that.

For many, having pets clearly has an abundance of psychological pluses as well. Cats, for example, are obviously oblivious to any problems a person might have. They want their supper and their rub while perched in a warm, stationary lap. The shift of focus to the pets wants and away from the unpleasant episode at the office can help lower stress.

The sympathetic nervous system works in conjunction with other brain areas to generate hormones and signals that create our 'fight or flight' mechanism. Shifting attention away activates the parasympathetic nervous system that has opposite effects. In short, we calm down. That interlude helps the body achieve homeostasis - the move back to equilibrium from an extreme - that stress has interrupted.

Dogs are terrific stress relievers, when they aren't creating more. Digging holes in the backyard, ruining a good pair of shoes or creating a mess on the carpet certainly don't help alleviate stress. But a short game of fetch with a tennis ball can. Watching their eager joy in simple activities is a vivid reminder that not everything in life is an occasion for doom and gloom.

Dogs have been domesticated to live with humans for over 10,000 years. During that time they have participated in a hundred common human rituals and activities, some of which can offer relief from stress symptoms. Fishing, hiking and other activities are in themselves stress relievers. When accompanied by a loved and loving dog the effect is amplified.

Even aquarium fish can provide a source of stress relief. Taking care of tropical fish requires a lot of careful planning and execution. That focus helps keep one's mind off what often amounts to trivial problems. Additional rewards can show up by observing the many interesting behaviors sea creatures exhibit.

A variety of pets - tropical birds, hamsters, ferrets and many more - frequently display actions that people find humorous. And even the most serious psychotherapist will agree that laughter is excellent medicine when it comes to lessening stress.

Though the form of communication between animals and humans is very different from that between one person and another, there is an undeniable understanding that forms between individuals and their non-human companions. That bond is often stronger than between casual friends. The result is a feeling of support without expectation of anything other than a good fur stroking.

After all, when was the last time you ever heard anyone say 'my dog drove me to drink'?

Questions & Answers about Tennis Ball Pet

What do I need to bring on a 6 hour trip to pick up our adopted puppy?

She is 12 weeks old and probably 15lbs+.

I have so far: Collar, leash, treats, Kong, tennis balls. So.. not a lot. We have a pet carrier but the door is rusted and we don't have time to order a new one.. would that be fine for the trip? What else? What do I need to get for puppy proofing? I'm going to Walmart tonight to get everything.

When we take our dog on the road I usually put her doggie bed in the backseat and after she gets bored of looking out the window she'll get into her bed and lay down. I keep a waterbowl back there (and since ur traveling 6 hrs food is good!) as well as a few toys she can play with. Bring paper towels, wet wipes,(you can get wet wipes in the travel item section @walmart) or car seat cleaner in case the dog pees a little on the seat. Maybe have a spare rubber gloves with ya in case you need to pick up poo at some point.

questions regarding your dog?

Sort of like a survey. I just want to see some other people's opinions.

1- Do you think it is okay for a family to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder just for a family dog ? (no conformation, agility, rally, tracking, obedience etc.)

2- Do you brush your dog's teeth regularly?

3-Where is your dog fed? (kitchen floor, in his/her crate etc)

4- Do you take your dog into "pets welcome" stores such as petco and petsmart?

5- Do you dress your dog up for reasons other than warmth?

6- Do you take your dog's collar off for them to sleep?

7- What is your dog's biggest training motive? (tennis ball, kibble, hot dogs etc)

8- Do you allow your dog on the furniture?

9- does your dog have his/her CGC?

10- does your dog have free reign of the house when you are home and/or away?

Thanks for your answers =]

1. Yes. My husband and I love American Staffordshire Terriers, but after a bad experience with our shelter Amstaff and two small kids we found a wonderful breeder and got a great dog. Our other dog is from a shelter.

2. No, we do not brush our dogs' teeth every day. We feed a premium food with no grain so there is no build up on their teeth.

3. Our dogs are fed in their crates. My cat is nosy and likes dog food and since the puppy and our adult are fed different amounts it's important to separate them.

4. Absolutely. Taking your dogs out into different social situations is vital for their mental growth. Undersocialized dogs can be very dangerous.

5. We have reindeer antlers for our older dog, jingle bell collars for both. We will be dressing them up next year for Halloween.

6. I take my dogs' collars off for baths and once every few weeks for a day or two to give them a good rub around their collar mark and give their skin a chance to breathe.

7. Charlie (our female) is treat motivated. Kitchi (our puppy) is motivated by affection and treats.

8. Dogs are allowed on the furniture only when they are invited. Once on the furniture they have to lay down and be calm or else they're kicked off.

9. Charlie will be going for her CGC next summer. Our puppy is going to be enrolled in basic obedience to get his STAR, then will be tested for CGC. When he is 18 months old we are also going to get his ATT certificate.

10. My dogs are crated when we're out. There is no such thing as "free reign" in my house for safety reasons, both for the dogs and my kids (16 month old twins). I make the rules and say where it's okay to be.

You're welcome!
